Adult Instruction

Instruction and play will be offered weekly from June through August.  All adult classes are 80 minutes.  Advance registration is required. Purchase six class pass that can be used for any adult class or try a class through the purchase of a single class pass.  To register for adult classes click on the appropriate class in upcoming events on this page.   

Discover, Explore, and Play Tennis for Adults.  For beginning and less-experienced players and/or those preferring or requiring balls hit to them with low to moderate power and difficulty.  Employs a holistic movement-based approach to learning the fundamentals of tennis.  All the basic strokes and movements will be taught as they are performed by expert players. Emphasis on balance; expressive, rhythmic dance-like movement; relaxation; extension; acceleration; and focus. Offered Monday & Wednesday 8:00-9:20.  Instructor: Charley Darley. 

Understand and Play Tennis for Adults.  For experienced players able to handle balls hit with a moderate to high degree of power and requiring a moderate to wide range of court coverage.  Includes action-based drilling and point-playing focused on expert stroke and movement techniques for singles and doubles shots, as well as shot patterns and strategy. Instruction has a foundation in balanced, relaxed, expressive, rhythmic movement, as well as awareness as it plays out in readiness, anticipation and court positioning.  Offered Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 - 10:20.  Instructor: Charley Darley. 

Private instruction is also available from Charles Darley, CCTA Director of Tennis Instruction.  Darley is a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Elite Professional.  After receiving a Cognitive Psychology Ph.D. from Stanford University, he embarked on a 45-year career of teaching and coaching tennis at the personal, club, state, college, national and international levels, including coaching USTA National Junior Teams in Stockholm, Sweden and Milan, Italy.

Darley was named to the USTA Northern Section Hall of Fame in 2013.  He is also a member of the State of Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame and the Rochester, MN Athletics Hall of Fame.  From 2002 to 2004 he was the Director and Head Coach of the North Shore Tennis Camp in Grand Marais, MN under the auspices of the Cook County Tennis Association.
As a player, Darley compiled a high school record of 72-0 at Rochester John Marshall, and is one of only three players to win three Minnesota High School Boys Singles Championships.  He played college tennis at the University of California, Berkeley where he was a two-time All-American and three-time Northern California Intercollegiate singles and two-time doubles champion.  In 1967, he was ranked #20 in the U.S. in singles and #5 in doubles, and #1 in Northern California in singles.  During the three years he played U.S international-level tournaments, he faced 10 players ranked #1 in the world and 9 additional players ranked #1 in their countries.
